Mr Arno Baltussen is a new Honorary Consul of the Republic of Poland. His jurisdiction spreads over provinces Gelderland, Overijssel and Flevoland. Mr Baltussen is a well-known animator of annual commemoration of Polish 1st Independent Parachute Brigade input during the Battle of Arnhem and chair of Stichting Driel-Polen.

During the inauguration in the city hall of Elst (Overbetuwe municipality) on 6 September 2013, Ambassador Jan Borkowski underlined his great appreciation for the competences of the new honorary consul. Mr. Arno Baltussen for many years now plays pivotal role in recognizing bravery of Polish parachutists who in 1944 were dropped behind enemy lines over the town of Driel close to Arnhem. He himself and Stichting Driel-Polen were very actively engaged in campaign which led to official recognition of the deeds of the 1st Independent Parachute Brigade and its commander gen. Stanisław Sosabowski by the Dutch authorities. Efforts of many people and organisations led in 2006 to awarding the unit with Military Willems Order. General Sosabowski received post mortem Order of the Bronze Lion.

New Honorary Consul wants to focus not only on preserving memory about Polish soldiers fighting for liberation of the Netherlands, but also on stimulating trade and economic ties and academic contacts between Poland and the Netherlands.
