    On 29 August 2012 Ambassador Jan BORKOWSKI had the honour and pleasure to hand in decoration to H.E. Jan Pieter BALKENENDE awarded by the President of the Republic of Poland, Mr. Bronisław KOMOROWSKI.

    His Excellency Jan Pieter (Jan Peter) Balkenende, former Dutch Prime Minister, received Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland for his devoted efforts and outstanding contribution to strengthening Polish - Dutch cooperation.

     

    During his speech, Ambassador Jan Borkowski underlined great importance Poland gave to constructive standpoint of the Netherlands in the key moments of EU accession negotiations. Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende was also crucial actor in the process of placing Polish soldiers who liberated the Netherlands during World Was II in the righteous place in history. Culmination of this process was the 45th anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem in Driel, attended by the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and his Dutch counterpart Jan Peter Balkenende in 2009.

     

    H.E.  J. P. Balkenende thanked for this high Polish state decoration by saying that although in his work as Prime Minister he always was lead by the interest of his country, development of cooperation with Poland - both in bilateral relations, as in the EU context, undoubtedly brings profit to both our countries. He also expressed his deep conviction that friendly relations between our countries and societies will continue to flourish.

     

    Information about the decoration:

    Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland is the highest rank of the one of most prestigious Polish state decorations. Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland is awarded to foreigners and Poles living abroad for their outstanding input to the international cooperation and development of relations of Poland with other countries and nations. Among the awardees with the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit are Queen Elisabeth II, Jaques Chirac, Ronald Reagan, Henry Kissinger, Norman Davies, Kofi Annan and Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.
